Letter T

Hello, All, long time, no write!

Well, I’ve been very busy with teaching. Starting to be a teacher again after two years off has proven quite a challenge and feels like starting all over again. Next year will be better, I won’t feel like I am reinventing everything every week! This year, I am struggling to keep my head above water. I am developing lots of new things, I just don’t have much time to post them! Here is one example of what I have been up to!

We are covering a letter a week. We are not going in alphabetical order, we are going in handwriting order. So we are finished the first few, which I will have to post letter. This week, we will be doing the letter T. Along with all of the other fun things we are doing, making an animal that starts with T (turkey) and a food that starts with t (tater tots), we also do a practice page. I am saving these pages and compiling into an alphabet book for each child to have at the end of the school year.

Each page is double sided. On the first side, there are large letters to color and trace, both capital and lowercase. The other side, I have divided into 3 sections, beginning, middle and end. They all have pictures next to them and the key letters are in a trace font. I have one last page that I cut apart. It has lots of pictures of things that start with that letter. They glue these things around the large letters on the first side. This is always lots of fun for the kids. I try to include concrete, every day objects that the kids can relate to. I also include some multicultural objects. This one has a picture of the Taj Majal in India.
On the copy for my school, I also include pictures of the children who have that letter in their name, to make it more personal.

So here is the PDF! educators desktop letter t

More letter pages to follow soon! I am also working on take home reading books! Hopefully, I will be able to write every weekend now! Thanks for reading!

Fun Food and Games Friday — July 20, 2012 — Ocean Life

Go Fishing!

Use magnetic fishing poles for learning new concepts or reviewing old ones. Cut fish out of paper, program with information and attach a paper clip to its mouth. I have used this to sort by size (small, medium, and large fish), do math problems (problem on one side, answer on the other) and to review sight words. If the child gets the answer wrong, I threw that fish back in so we can have another try at it later!

Shark Attack!

Melon Fish
Cut a shark face, complete with teeth out of a watermelon. With the remaining watermelon and other melons, cut out fish forms to put in the shark. You can either use a fish cookie cutter or a knife and do it freehand.

There’s A Song For That Thursday — July 19, 2012 — Ocean Life

Three Little Fishies
(To the tune of Three Little Monkeys)

Three little fishies swimming in the sea,
Teasing Mr. Shark, you can’t catch me.
Along came Mr. Shark, quiet as can be…
Chomp!
2 little fishies swimming in the sea,
(Continue on as in the original song.)

We Get Messy On Wednesday! — July 18, 2012 — Ocean Life

Print out  the Dolphin Outline and cut out. Use a loop of tape to attach to a piece of gray paper or aluminum foil. Let the children use sponges to fill the paper with different shades of blue paint. Assist the child in removing the dolphin cut out.

We had lots of fun with this one. It was neat to paint on something other than paper. Every single one turned out with a crisp, clear outline. Please visit my shop on Teacher’s Notebook to purchase the entire Ocean Life unit:

Mad Math Monday — July 16, 2012 — Ocean Life

Make a chart like the one shown. Program the fish with numerals, trace on blue paper. Give each traced fish the corresponding number of bubbles. Students count the bubbles to figure out the placement of the fish.

The children had so much fun doing this, they wanted to do it over and over. Next time, I would make multiple games, with different placement of the fish, mixing them up more every time.

Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for Talk, Read, and Write Tuesday.

Science and Social Studies Saturday — July 7, 2012 — American Independence Day!

Ask parents to help and collect yourself various colorful pieces of recycling, like plastics and paper. Cut these apart and separate by color — red, white and blue (maybe even silver and gold). Photocopy and enlarge the American flag from the PDF link below. Allow the children to create a collage by “coloring in the flag” with trash. Use Mod Podge, wallpaper glue or watered down Elmer’s glue to stick the pieces on. You can color code the flag with crayon or pencil for the children. Talk about how important recycling is to the environment.

Using sidewalk chalk, mark a patriotic path for your students to follow. Give them instruments and streamers. Play marching music. Invite other classes to be spectators, or even to join in on the fun. Parents might like to have a parade scheduled for their enjoyment as well.

I will taking a week off to create a massive Ocean Unit and then a set of leveled take home reading books.
